WMS has what we call Homeroom and/or Academic Mentoring. Research shows that schools who recognize having an interactive, purposeful "advisory program" can play a critical role in a school's overall academic and student support service plans. According to Dale (1995), he states there are seven main goals in an advisory which assists studens in understanding themselves and others, and they are: developing self-concept and self-esteem, developing interpesonl skills, developing decision-making skills, providing students with an adult advocate, creating a sense of family within the school community, and monitoring students' academic programs and grades. Our AM is made up of 15 students and one teacher. We meet Tuesday-Friday first thing from 7:45 a.m. to 8:09 a.m.. On Monday's we meet from 7:45 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. During this period, we have incorporated character education, Second Step, teamwork, and community building. My role as an advisor is to be more of that as a facilitator. I am using the Active Learning model to teach character education whereby students participate in challenges to learn the traits. Along with everything that is taking place in our AM, the kids felt very strongly that we have a theme song...they chose "Lean On Me". It truly is a good song with a great meaning...we hope you enjoy listening & singing along with it as much as we do!
